Our area faced an exceptional event of 80-100 mm rainfall within an hour, when most of the sewer systems are still based on processing 20 mm rainfall. This led to a lot of local flooding. 79 households have since gotten a chance for financial compensation as several houses have become uninhabitable due to water damage and health impairing molds.
You can see a video of the flooding of the highway A1, the main connection to Germany and beyond. Images from the emergency services show flooding in different towns. While the new green infrastructure in Enschede helped a lot in reducing the peak of the flood, it is not enough for this type of massive rainfall event. It is always a tough choice to either invest in more measures when you don't know when an event of a certain size will occur. It is clear however that investments always pay off when such an extreme event does occur.
